Feedback Friday

The original Simon Cowells

Okay.  So don’t worry, this isn’t going to be a weekly thing and I know that chances are you aren’t even reading this on a Friday, but I couldn’t resist the cheese factor of the title. Or the picture. Simple pleasures, but I’d better get back to the point.

Dear readers, I’m asking for your help.

I want to check in with you and ask for your thoughts and constructive feedback regarding this blog.  I welcome any comments you may have regarding anything, from content to style. (And before you start I just want to say that I am aware of the atrocious grammar in my extended visitation post and I’ll be editing it this weekend. I’m never letting myself post past 3 a.m. again!)  Here’s a few questions to help get you in the mood:

Are my posts relevant? Interesting? Are there topics which I’m missing or skimming over?

Is my comma usage or sentence structure completely annoying or difficult to read?

Do you find this website hard to navigate through or not user friendly? Have you noticed broken links?  Is the homepage useless?

Is the header juvenile? Is the overall style cluttered or ugly?  Is the color scheme stupid?

While I was away on vacation a couple of weeks ago, I jumped on my friend’s laptop to do some maintenance and was shocked to see that my header was shorter than my blog width!  I couldn’t believe it!  It lines up perfectly on every other computer I’ve used.  Does anyone else have that on their browser too?  Suddenly I felt like I had my fly down.  Have you ever had that happen?  And then wonder about how many people noticed and didn’t tell you?  Embarrassing!  Anyway….

Tell me.  I want to know. I’m not going to get mad at anything you have to say and in fact I’ll thank you and appreciate the time you took to do so.  And one other thing: I’m not fishing for compliments here. Actually, if you don’t have anything constructive to write I would appreciate it if you didn’t comment here.  No need to waste your valuable time blowing sunshine up my toosh.

So give it to me.  Straight and honest. I want this place to be the very best it can be.

Sincerely,

Carolyn

You have nothing to worry about. The header is gorgeous and not at all childish, the homepage is lovely and informative, the site itself is delightfully easy to navigate, and I haven’t noticed any broken links. Most importantly, however, is how useful this blog is. It’s brought a lot of different people together to discuss a serious topic with frank honesty.

Keep up the fabulous work, Carolyn.

Thank you for your kind words, Urchin. Your opinion means so much to me and you are one of the few who have really seen this site evolve into what it is today. Of course, content is the most important thing to me, so your last compliment makes me smile.

Carolyn-

I am one of your regular readers (I get your posts by RSS feed) who has never commented before…so I guess I am a lurker. Hah.

Your blog looks fine on my computer, and I have never had any issues with your links, grammer, etc. The redesign is nice.

But it’s your content that makes me want to read your blog every day.

The first time I stumbled across your blog I spent the whole first morning reading every post with tears streaming down my face.

I am not one of your stated target readers…a grown up child of divorce. I am a divorced mother. And I am extremely committed to making this divorce and blended family thing work out the best it can, for my 5 y/o daughter.

Not a minute goes by every day where in the back of my mind I am not worried about what being a “child of divorce” will mean for my daughter’s emotional health and growth.

And your blog is the only one I’ve found that gives me, as a parent with no prior experience with divorce, a window into her head and heart. Thus, the tears.

So, please understand that your blog is not being read by just grown up children of divorce. You are a wonderful resource for divorced parents who are committed to lessening the impact of the divorce on their children. I have learned several things from your real-life experience and perspective that I haven’t found any where else. And I really think my daughter will benefit from the guides and lessons you have published. You are making an impact.

Which brings me to my constructive (I hope) criticism. No, I didn’t write this to blow sunshine at you. I wanted you to know my wish as one of your avid readers: more guides. More consistent useful content. The guides are what I read you for. The guides give me perspective on what I am and am not doing right as I struggle to figure this coparenting thing out. There are so many issues involved, and there are no instruction manuals handed out in divorce court that tell you how to do it right so as not to screw up your child!

That’s it, that’s my wish. Header, designs, navigation….it’s all good. But the guides are your goldmine and I wish you published more how-to type stuff for those of us who are really trying to do this divorce with children thing the right way. If there is a right way. Thanks for all you’ve done….and please publish more….I look forward to your insights!

Jenn, thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a nice and thoughtful comment. I am glad to hear that my content is valuable to you. It is feedback like yours that spurs me on to keep writing here.

I will indeed keep posting guides. I’m glad you like those. And if you are ever struggling with something and would like me to write something regarding a certain topic (either privately or posted here), never hesitate to send me an email.

Thanks again Jenn. I really appreciate it.
